The American Red Cross focuses on meeting people’s immediate, emergency, disaster-caused needs. Through Red Cross Disaster Services, we provide shelter, clothing, and food, in addition to health and mental health services in order to ensure basic human needs are met. After the initial trauma of a disaster, we work with individuals and families involved on an ongoing basis so that they can resume their normal, everyday lives. All American Red Cross disaster relief assistance is provided free of cost thanks to the generosity of those who donate their time and money to help those in their time of need. The Community Preparedness Specialist will create a disaster education curriculum and recruit volunteers that can deliver this curriculum to Walla Walla and Columbia Counties and will coordinate and implement local Red Cross community education activities that support emergency preparedness and engage citizens in preparedness and response to acts of terrorism and other disasters.
Duties and responsibilities include the following:
Coordinate efforts to offer citizens volunteer opportunities,
educational information and training courses to address disaster preparedness and response.
Identify, recruit and train volunteers to form a pool of
community disaster education presenters.
Survey the skills and abilities of volunteers and help match
volunteers with first responder organizations.
Organize recognition activities for volunteers involved in
disaster preparedness activities.
Assemble appropriate preparedness materials to disseminate
and use in community education activities.
Coordinate local community trainings in both English and
Spanish.
Research and utilize opportunities to participate in preparedness
presentations and disaster education activities.
Strive to have community preparedness education strategies that
target special needs groups and reflect the cultural diversity of
the community.
